World Health Organisation Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan has been quoted as saying by a lot of media houses that B.1.617, the coronavirus variant spreading in India might be potentially resistant to vaccine protection. Turns out that she has been misqouted.
Clarifying her position, Soumya Swaminathan wrote, “I have been misquoted. I said B1.617 is more transmissible, based on which it is a variant of concern. There is no data on its impact on diagnostics, therapeutics or vaccine effectiveness yet.”
The variant is also known as the double mutant strain. It’s said to have been discovered in India in October last.
