West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has told the Centre that the state government is willing to provide land to enable the manufacturing of COVID-19 vaccines.
Her offer in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has come in for ridicule. It’s because vaccine manufacturing is lagging in India not because there is no land to set up units but because of other constraints.
If land was the constraining variable, the Centre would by now have allotted lands to makers from its pool of land banks.
Many are criticizing Banerjee for trying to manage optics and look visionary while her State grapples to attract investment in general.
