BJP sweep in ZP polls doesn’t indicate anything: Analysts

The BJP has swept the Zilla Panchayat chairperson polls in Uttar Pradesh. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath have congratulated the cadre after their party won 65 out of 75 seats.

The landslide victory in the ZP polls has tempted many observers to say that it’s an early indication that Yogi Aditynath will retain power in a massive way in the 2022 Assembly elections. However, others are throwing caveats.

A report explains that the ruling party always has an edge in ZP polls in UP. The Samajwadi Party won 60 out of 75 seats in 2016. Months later, the party was decimated in the Assembly elections. “It’s common for the ruling party-backed candidates to win in such polls. Not much can be read into the BJP sweep this year,” an analyst suggested on a TV channel.

That said, the BJP is extremely happy that it has won in SP strongholds. Reportedly, the party leaders have been working hard to mobilize cadre support in rural areas.
