Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel today wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make a suggestion around the coronavirus vaccination strategy. As per him, priority for vaccination should be given to the socially and economically weaker sections, considering that the supply of vaccines is scarce.
The suggestion is not scientific and smacks of vote-bank politicking, many Netizens are saying. It has been held, around the world by experts, that vaccination has to be rolled out for frontline workers first, followed by the old and those with co-morbidities. And this is what has been done in India. The opening of vaccination to those in the age group of 18-44 came later.
Prioritizing on the basis of the socio-economic status of citizens doesn’t have any valid ground. A poor man with no co-morbidities doesn’t need to take the vaccine before a rich old woman who is suffering from diabetes.
