Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani died on Wednesday. A founder-member of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Geelani was the chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference.
The news of his death has resulted in polarizing reactions on social media. Several Islamists hailed Geelani as a freedom fighter, forcing many Netizens counter the narrative about the Islamist leader. Geelani, many reminded, was a pro-Pakistan Indian. Columnist and senior journalist Aarti Tikoo wrote, “Syed Ali Shah Geelani, the Islamist who pushed hundreds of Kashmiri Muslims into jihadi terrorism for the sake of Pakistan, is dead. He was responsible for the ethnic cleansing of Hindus in Kashmir. He will go down in history as a loser jihadi, whom Pakistan eventually dumped.”
There is a view that no patriotic Indian can be an admirer of Geelani. Journalist Aditya Raj Kaul, who hails from Kashmir, said that Geelani motivated and pushed innocent Kashmiri youth towards violence, bloodshed and suicidal death path in the name of Islamist Jihad.
