Punjab will go to the polls in early 2022. The Shiromani Akali Dal recently joined hands with the Bahujan Samaj Party in its attempt to oust the ruling Congress.
Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Admi Party, too, is working to mobilize public support in its favour in an attempt to wrest power from the Grand Old Party. On Tuesday, the Delhi Chief Minister promised 300 units of free electricity per month for each household in Punjab should his party wrest power. The AAP government’s main poll plank in Delhi has been free power. It has paid rich dividends for the party.
The promise has come in for criticism from a section of commentators. Punjab being a debt-ridden State, freebies and socialist policies don’t augur well for its financial health. The State’s farmers have already been heavily subsidised over the decades.
