‘Lagaan’ at 20: How it became a Bollywood trend-setter

It was on this day (June 15) in 2001 that ‘Lagaan’ hit the cinemas amid high expectations. Based on a cricket match set in the British India era, it was headlined by Aamir Khan, who was also its ambitious producer.

The film became a trend-setter when even the likes of Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra were skeptical about it. Aamir Khan made it a point to shoot the film in a single schedule when it was not the norm in Hindi cinema for big-ticket movies.

In another important way too, the film raised the bar. Director Ashutosh Gowariker shot it using the sync sound technique, thanks to Aamir Khan’s encouragement. And the film introduced the Assistant Director trend in Bollywood.

Since then, big names such as KJo have shot all their films in a single schedule, on sync sound and with an AD in tow.
