Congress, JDS, NCP, Shiv Sena, TMC, DMK, RJD and a few other parties have written a letter to Narendra Modi, making certain demands. One of the demands is that the vaccination policy has to be centralized.
“Procure vaccines centrally from all available sources – global and domestic,” the first demand says.
This is nothing but an about-turn. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, among others, demanded decentralization only a few weeks ago.
A lot of commentators are also criticizing the Opposition parties for asking for the spending of Rs 35,000 Cr (budgetary allocation) towards vaccines. “How do they think 16 crore people have been vaccinated for free?”, Netizens are asking. Free, universal vaccination, as demanded by the parties, is also potentially fraught with some practical challenges.
