Olympic Silver medalist Saikom Mirabai Chanu has brought the first medal in Tokyo Olympics for India in Women’s 49kg weightlifting. But her journey to the Olympics was not easy.
It was hard for her to afford private transport to reach training in Imphal from her small village, Nongpok Kakching.
She has taken many lifts to reach Imphal for the training from the Sand carrying Truck drivers, free of cost. After bringing the Olympic medal, she organized an event to felicitate all sand carrying truck drivers who were part of her journey to the road of the Olympics.
Her village is 25km away from Imphal. And she used to take a lift from these truck drivers free of cost. She arranged a delicious meal for 150 truck drivers and their helpers. Later, she gifted them a shirt and a Manipuri scarf.
Now, her extraordinary gesture has been lauded by the Twitterati. This unfolds the great character of Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. Her character is a million times better than the Olympics gold medal.
