The sedition law of the Indian Penal Court has been one of the most controversial ones. Today, the Supreme Court opined that it’s a colonial-era law. The apex court asked, “Do we still need it 75 years after Independence?”
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi noted that the observation by the highest court of the land is welcome. “We welcome this observation by the Supreme Court,” the Wayanad MP said.
Earlier today, the court also said that the sedition law was meant to suppress the freedom of movement to silence Mahatma Gandhi and other freedom fighters. The “alarming misuse” of the controversial law has come in for censure from the court.
Commentators have said that almost all governments in India, both at the Centre and States, have misused the law over the decades.
