Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced renaming the Rajiv Khel Ratna award as ‘Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna’. PM Modi has tweeted that their government has come up with this decision after many requesting to name Khel Ratna award after the Wizard of Hockey, Legend, Major Dhyan Chand.
Many sports personalities across the nation have welcomed this decision of the Indian government and it will inspire millions. IAAF World Athletics Finalist, Anju Bobby George called this decision of naming the Khel Ratna award after Major Dhyan Chand is a great one. And she also said that it would inspire many young athletes.
Major Dhyan Chand is one of the all-time greatest sports personalities in the history of the sport. He is popularly known as ‘The Wizard or The Magician of the Hockey’ in the history of the sport. Mr Dhyan Chand is popular for his goal-scoring skills and earned three Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932, and 1936. He played Hockey internally from 1926-1949.
His goal-scoring feats surpassed boundaries and gained fame across the globe. Followed by his era, Indian hockey dominated the world from 1928-1964 and the Indian team won 7 out of 8 Olympic field hockey events, based on Wikipedia.
And based on the autobiography ‘Goal’, Major Dhyan Chand scored 570 goals in 185 matches. He was born on 29th August 1905 and died on 3rd December 1979. Every year, Indian government celebrates his birthday as ‘National Sports Day’. The Indian government awarded him with the third highest civilian of honour ‘Padma Bhushan’ in 1956.
