Review: Jathi Ratnalu(Naveen Polishetty)

‘Jathi Ratnalu’, starring an ensemble cast, hit the cinemas on Thursday. The film is a satirical comedy. Let’s find out what works and what doesn’t in the film.

Story:
Three youngsters (played by Naveen Polishetty, Priyadarshi and Rahul Ramakrishna) are accused of trying to eliminate a Minister-designate days after they reach Hyderabad in search of new careers. Since they are prone to commit blunders, they fail to defend themselves. The rest of the film is about who implicated them in the false case and how they come out of the crisis.

Performances:
Naveen Polishetty is a smashing talent. He is as good as he was in ‘Agent Sai Srinivas Athreya’. This one is only his second Telugu film and the actor is making the right career moves in terms of script selection. He is absolutely hilarious in each of the scenes.

Priyadarshi, whose comedy is subtle, tickles the funny bone. Rahul Ramakrishna has been boring of late, but here, he is likable. Faria Abdullah acts like an experienced actor, although this is her feature film debut. VK Naresh’s frustrations make us laugh hard. Murali Sharma is superb as a mean politician. Brahmanandam, Vennela Kishore, Mirchi Kiran is good and all others fit the bill.

Technical Departments:
Radhan’s background music is apt. The three songs (Chitti, Chanchalguda Jail Lo and Mana Jathiratnalu) are enjoyable. Siddam Manohar’s cinematography is intelligent.

Analysis:
When the film begins, it starts out suddenly. We see Naveen Polishetty talking gibberish. The scene sets the tone for an unabashed laugh riot. The three friends pine for attention and respect. When they don’t get it in Jogipet, they move to Hyderabad, where things get worse for them. But, in a typical Telugu film style, Naveen’s Srikanth bumps into a beautiful woman (Faria), who reciprocates romantic feelings.

The film then becomes a crime comedy. In a star hotel, where the three friends go to enjoy drinking “French wine with English subtitles”, MLA Chanakya (Murali Sharma) is almost murdered. The three are jailed when the police suspect that they are had wanted to be the MLA’s assassins. The MLA is going to be the Sports Minister of the State in a matter of days.

In the jail, the three characters cross paths with hilarious characters, one of them being Vennela Kishore. In the court, Brahmanandam plays a judge and the hero’s girlfriend, a dimwit lawyer, makes the matters worse.

The film doesn’t care about typical Telugu cinema tropes. There is an emotional angle to why the hero calls the heroine ‘Chitti’ without knowing the value of the name.

The second half is a bit of a letdown. But even when the scenes lack the punch, Naveen’s brilliant comic timing saves the day.

Does the film have flaws besides a somewhat boring second half? Yes, it has no logic to speak of. But then, many serious thrillers don’t make sense these days. ‘Jathi Ratnalu’ is a comedy.

Verdict:
Watch ‘Jathi Ratnalu’ for 140 minutes of mindless comedy. You will have a good time!
