The Telugu film industry is in a wait-and-watch mode in spite of the fact that theatres are open in Telangana and will be allowed to operate at 50% capacity in Andhra Pradesh from July 8.
The producers are not proactive about announcing release dates. So far, ‘SR Kalyanamandapam’ alone has locked its date (August 6). But the audience are waiting for some important movies like ‘Tuck Jagadish’ and ‘Love Stories’, among others.
The producers, distributors and exhibitors are not sure if the audience will return and pack the cinema halls amid fears of a new wave, amplified by social media messages. Cases are still not down to the sub-20,000 mark. Only then will the film industry gain confidence, perhaps.
In Mumbai, theatres and malls were re-opened and then closed after Delta Variant cast a shadow of fear. It seems Tollywood is silently watching these developments.
For now, all hopes are on OTT releases. ‘Maestro’ and ‘Drushyam 2’ are said to be sure-shot OTT releases, but ‘Narappa’ may or may not release directly on OTT.
