Union Minister says Sonia Gandhi should have been the PM

In a surprising set of remarks, Union Minister Ramdas Athawale has opined that Sonia Gandhi should have become India’s Prime Minister when the UPA came to power in 2004. Athawale, an ally of the BJP, said that raising the issue of her “foreign origin” was meaningless, considering that she has been an Indian citizen.

Athawale also said that Sonia Gandhi should have picked someone like Sharad Pawar if she didn’t want to become the PM.

Back in the 2000s, the BJP used to raise the foreign origin issue quite often. Since Sonia Gandhi was born in Italy and was a citizen of Itay for many years, the BJP would question Congress’ loyalty to her. But the issue died down after Manmohan Singh was made the PM.
