UP Congress’ ‘Brahmin face’ joins BJP

Less than a year before the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, Congress leader Jitin Prasada today ditched the Grand Old Party and joined the BJP in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Prasada has been seen as the UP Congress’ Brahmin face for years.

It’s said that Prasada has received a raw deal from his party for years, which is why he is believed to have decided to quit it and embrace the saffron party.
There is also this view that Prasada is a lightweight who has not won a single election since 2014 and that the Congress party has nothing to lose.

He wanted some reforms in the party but they didn’t happen. Journalist Rohini Singh has opined that Prasada was the biggest lackey of the Nehru-Gandhi family. “He was the closest to Rahul Gandhi. Frankly, if there were indeed democratic reforms (in the Congress party, as reportedly wanted by him), he wouldn’t have gotten a ticket so many times. He was fast-tracked to glory,” she opined.

There are speculations that former Minister and Congress leader Milind Deora, too, will join the BJP soon. Amidst this, he today tweeted that he believes Congress as a party can and must reclaim its position as India’s big tent party. “We still have a strong bench that if empowered and optimally utilized, can deliver. I only wish that several of my friends, peers and valued colleagues hadn’t left us,” he added.
