Superstar Krishna was a big hero but he was never seen as a giant. The Telugu film industry was ruled by NT Rama Rao and ANR, both of whom enjoyed the liking of legions of fans. Their movies would be made on a rich scale.
Krishna, who was by then a producer in 1970, wanted to do a lavish film to match with the scale of the movies that NTR and ANR were doing. “I wanted to act in a rich-looking film so that my stature goes up. ‘Mosagallaku Mosagadu’ was conceived to be that film with a span. Thanks to controlling the budget in different ways, it could be made at a cost of Rs 7 lakh. Looks wise, it looked like a Rs 20-lakh movie,” Krishna said the other day, marking the movie’s 50th anniversary.
The film was shot in Rajasthan and Shimla, among others. Right from saving on the travel expenses, Krishna ensured that everything was under tight control.
